Restoring Pompeii?

There was an interesting comment piece in The Guardian last week by Simon Jenkins. He is a former editor of The Times, and currently Chairman of the National Trust in the UK. He was provoked by the restoration for a Tate exhibition of the damaged painting of Pompeii by the nineteenth century artist John Martin to wonder why the ancient city itself shouldn't be restored. It is worth considering these opinions from someone outside the usual range of commentators. The comments posted on the blog at the end of the piece show some opinions from the general public that will be even more challenging for those of us closely involved with Pompeii.
